Meanwhile out in the middle of nowhere...
I just got my summer tires and will have them on by this weekend so I can be slightly less uncompetitive for autocross.
Before everyone jumps on me for getting some of the slowest autox tires: I got them for a steal of $105 per tire and I need a tire that won't wear out in 30 seconds of driving on Rez roads.

I’ve still got mine on. They’re staying on until at least mid-late November.

What’s the tread wear rating on those?

The Azenis are an oddly popular front tire choice for drifters. I'm not sure why but everyone seems to choose the Falkens for their front tires.

“200"

Decent grip, lower price and significantly better wear would be my assumption

Thats a bit brave being in Michigan and all

Nice.

Probably a bit closer to actually being 200 than most other autocross tires

Same, I just put a set of those on the Miata

Heres to hoping they hold up well!

Excellent set of tires! I just had those on my STi. Its hilarious to me to see such deep grooves. They were quite worn out when I replaced them though at 15k miles. That seems decent for a 200TW tire I guess but I dont think I can afford doing that all of the time. I will probably go with a higher treadwear tire next summer since I dont plan on autocrossing/tracking that car anyways. The Miata can keep getting the 200TW summers though since its pretty necessary on the track.

That’s what I would have thought too but then I saw a couple guys (with LS powered Nissans) running RE71Rs on the rear with Falkens on the front. Only thing I can think of is that maybe the Falkens just play nicer at ludicrous steering angles than other sticky tires.

It is California. I am not worried about it

If I could get 10-15k miles out of these including autocrossing I’d be ecstatic.
On my dad's car we got about 1.5k miles out of each of our sets of RE71s when we were both autocrossing it consistently.

They might have a bit of a stiffer sidewall although I can’t confirm, it’s something I’ve heard thrown around. That might help in explaining.

Oh god that sounds so bad haha. This is why I do not ever want the RE71s. Its just not worth it to be that little bit faster. The STi only saw canyon runs so it wasnt too hard of a 15k realistically.
The Dunlop Z2 star specs on the Miata though have been through 4 track days (80 minutes total track time) now and about 10k street miles as well. Those tires are troopers since I will be taking them through another track day later this month and we will see how long they last after that. Generally the lighter, less powerful Miata should use less tire though.

If you're serious about autocrossing the RE71s are so worth it, haha. The level of dry and wet grip they have is just insane. If I didn't have to drive 100+ miles to autocross I would have definitely went with them.

I would rather (and have before) just run slicks at that point. I have never been serious about autox classing, I always have just ignored that and looked at raw times lol. There is no way I could run my street tires as the RE71, would have to use a second set of wheels. And with going that route, id rather use the Maxxis RC1 or the Nitto/Toyo equivalents. Hence how I ended up in street prepared. Thankfully my local region had like 5 other cars that did the same lack of prep and most of them had two drivers so we had ample competition.
I think there was one event where we had 8 of us in CSP and it was a hot contention for the top 3. I managed to win that time by like 1/10th of a second. I do miss that aspect of autocross but I also dont have a region like that anymore so thats why ive just been doing track days instead.

Yeah, especially driving a Mustang.

Thats certainly more than fair a nd in all honesty I’m probably going to transition to track days once I have an actual track to go to. I competed at a few national level events this year and how seriously everyone took it was very off-putting.
My home region (Glen) is always fun because we all know that it's something we do for fun and goof off so it's always a good time. But even my region now (Rio Grande) there's a lot of people who take it way too seriously.

Haha when my home region did a gymkhanna-esque course as a bonus challenge I knew that it was the perfect people for me. I can never go back to the IM SO SERIOUS CROWD ever again . I just want to go fast and better myself but I could really care less about exact timing and placement versus others. I am just racing myself and hanging out with like minded people all day. I was surprised when I moved out to Socal how cheap track days can be. I recall doing 2-day autocrosses that neared $200 and meanwhile I am now doing track days for $180. And even just 1 out of the 4 sessions I get is probably more seat time than a whole season of autocross!!

I used a couple of sets as track tires, they held up well and weren’t too far off my RE71r’s. Great tire at a great price. Very similar to the Hankook RS4.

I certainly don’t mind being a little competitive, especially with a lot of the friends I’ve made but thats really just something that adds on to the fun for us. And track days for $180 is an absolute steal!

Still doing autocross? I’m quite envious. Our club had our final event a couple weeks ago. Now the LONG wait until May.....

Only my third event of the year since it hasn’t been doing much for me lately and I’m not a huge fan of autocrossing my Mini.
I live in northern AZ and all the events are in NM so we get late March/early April to late October. But even home in upstate NY is having their last event next weekend.
